The subway after midnight

New York’s subway runs 24 hours a day, but the night version is a different system: fewer lines, longer waits, and some routes running local or taking a different path. Here is every line, timed from the MTA’s own schedule.

How often from my station?

Waits are the median and longest gaps between departures from a busy station on the line, 1–5 a.m. on Monday–Thursday nights, in each direction (the longer direction is shown). From the MTA’s subway GTFS schedule “20261028-fall-2026-pick-with-long-term-supplements”, valid 2026-11-01 to 2027-05-15. The schedule doesn’t include planned work, which often changes overnight service: always check MTA planned service changes and the MTA late-night subway map.

Riding late, safely

MTA advice for off-hours: wait where you can be seen, ride in the conductor’s car (the middle of the train), and use the Help Point intercoms in every station. Call 911 in an emergency (MTA safety). Alcohol is not allowed on the subway or buses.

When the trains stop

Many bus routes run all night too: see night buses. Leaving the city? LIRR and Metro-North last trains. PATH to New Jersey runs 24/7, and the Staten Island Ferry runs all night, every 30 minutes.
