The night here
The planning area that contains Times Square and the Theater District has more on-premises licences than any other in New York: hundreds of restaurants, plus hotels, theaters and their bars. Most of the theaters are on the side streets between Sixth and Eighth Avenues in the 40s, and the evening has a rhythm set by curtain times: busy before the shows, a surge when they let out, then quieter.
Times Square itself stays lit and walkable all night. Getting home is easy: Times Sq–42 St and the stations along Sixth and Eighth Avenues have more all-night lines than any other guide here.
When it gets loud
366 complaints about loud music or parties at bars, clubs and other businesses were made to 311 from here in the last 12 months (161 per km², #17 of 24). 44% came in between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., and 25% on Friday and Saturday nights.
Each row is an evening running into the next morning (the Saturday row ends Sunday at noon). Darker = more complaints. Source: NYC 311 service requests, “Noise – Commercial: Loud Music/Party”.
